Metabolism Boosters

Metabolism

When we talk about weight loss its hard not to talk about metabolism.  Metabolism and weight are synonymous with each other but what is metabolism and what can we do to boost it?

What is Metabolism?

To put it in plain English your metabolism helps you to digest food and absorb its nutrients.

It has been shown that a person with a slow metabolism is often obese – as you are not breaking down and digesting your substance as quickly as someone who has a fast metabolisn.

What Causes Slow Metabolism?

A slow metabolism can be attributed to many different things, but I like to think it is your diet and the amount of physical activity you get.

When we first try to lose weight what is the first thing people often do? Lower the amount of calories and fat they take in.  Believe it or not this actually slows down your metabolism.  A good weight loss routine will also include exercise to help raise your metabolism.

Old age…As we get older our metabolism slows down, this is a natural process.  More often than not as people age they find it harder to lose or keep weight off because their metabolism rate is low.

Genetics.  This is something we can’t help as it is genetic.

How Can you Boost your Metabolism?

There are tons of ways to boost your metabolism but I think it really breaks down to a few things; exercise, staying hydrated and a healthy diet.

Ensuring that you maintain these three things there are plenty of foods and products that work as metabolism boosters.

Green tea – not surprised?  This product has been promoted as a weight lose product for quite some time now.   Green tea contains the chemical that results in your body burning more calories.  Coffee also works as a metabolism booster but that shouldn’t give you any reason to drink more than three cups a day.

Other metabolism boosters include nuts such as almond, grapefruit, apples, yogurt, turkey and spinach. I find that a well a proper mixture or carbohydrates and proteins offer an excellent source to boost your metabolism.

The best metabolism booster is probably going to be exercise.  The more intense your work out the faster your heart rate, the faster your body will digest food to fuel you.  This is a good thing because it means that your body doesn’t get a chance to store excess fat.  Combine a good diet with daily exercise and you will be on your way to losing weight and boosting your metabolism.
